Resume Blast

By Robin Ogden

Are you sending out your resume like popcorn from a machine?

Buttering up your resume with lots of cliché terms and blasting it out over the internet like popcorn from a machine will do this for you…”nothing”.  One of the worst things you can do is to build up a fancy generic resume, blast it everywhere and sit back and think that you’re doing a successful ‘job search’.  Doing this is the equivalent to dropping your business cards from an airplane – most of which will probably land in trees, the gutter and in a few unsuspecting hands that will look at it oddly and toss it aside.  Resume blasting gets much of the same results – it just doesn’t work.

At its best resume blasting gives you a false sense of accomplishment and at its worst it is annoying to both employers and recruiters who are busy and have no interest in figuring out where to place you inside their organization.  In today’s marketplace, both employers and recruiters expect that job seekers have done their homework up front and know the industry, as well as the Company and have targeted their resume to speak specifically to the needs of the employer.  If you haven’t done that then your resume is practically useless.

If your approach has been blasting your resume out like popcorn, it’s time to step back take a breath and develop a strong, accomplishment based, targeted resume so you can reap the benefits.  Start thinking smart – recruiters and employers only have so much time to spend reading/reviewing resumes so you only have a matter of seconds before a judgment is made.  Never convince yourself that the reviewer is reading your resume in its entirety.  The top half of your resume will be their initial focus point and that’s where you’ll need to hook them in to reading further.

Remember, your resume has two big jobs to do for you:

1) Land you the interview, and

2) Guide your interview.

So, stay focused on your accomplishments and use strong enticing action verbs to begin your sentences.  Remember, in today’s marketplace it is just too easy to have a professional resume writer review your resume for free and give you tips and advice that can help you build a dynamic, well prepared resume.  Employers know this – so if you send them a resume that is below par it will go where it belongs…in the recycle bin.
